They even added the ending as an insert song, they really wanted this moment to be emotional man c'mon. not sure about the manga, I'm anime only, but the anime version was going for a cry-fest here 100%
I mean, this could have worked similar to something like War in the Pocket if that was what they were going for, that was a work that managed to deliver a gut-punch in 6 episodes... maybe my expectations were too high... this is a common problem in modern media in general I feel though

bro it was for the shock factor, with the song in the background and her saying how she wants to live and see places u would never ever expect her to die at that moment, it was for shock factor

You are just misunderstanding. I won’t necessarily say its your fault, since the direction may have led people to believe that it was a somewhat emotional arc. However, it is not a fault in “writing”, like you seem to think it is. There will be others who will not be upset at this “twist”, because they were able to recognise that this isn’t necessarily meant to be cry porn. This is very consistent in JJK, and there is even precedent with Junpei. If it annoys you enough, you’re better off just dropping it sooner rather than later
Dude, I'm not misunderstanding anything and please don't be condescending towards me.
Anime by virtue of being an audiovisual medium can choose to interpret a scene that was neutral in writing in multiple ways. All I'm saying is that it is very unfortunate that they chose to play this one the way they did. Generally speaking it is way too common in the last few years to play loose with more emotional OSTs even when the scene doesn't warrant it, I noticed this very heavily in Fruits Basket 2003 vs 2017 for example... it's just tone deaf direction and it fucking sucks.
And of course, Junpei was a terrible character, I expected more here.
And yeah, if you wanna get into writing, I don't know how this story develops, but from where we stand, if this incident is supposed to affect Gojo and Geto deeply to change them in the future, I just don't buy it, the way it is presented is way too half-baked. Maybe I'll change my mind, I don't know yet.
Maybe I will drop it if it keeps disappointing this way...

It was not my intention to be condescending. And yes everything you said is true. When I was watching, I couldn’t help but think that Mappa’s tendency to make scenes “overly cinematic” would have emphasised the feeling that this was meant to be an emotionally charged segment, which would in turn make any disappointments greater. I think your feelings on it being half baked may change as the arc goes on, but who knows. I think I’m surprised that you expect emotional depth from JJK considering the first season is usually critiqued for its absence of such. I am curious to see how you feel about the rest of the season though

i don't get why they didn't just give her the choice to assimilate or not from the start instead of waiting till the end.

that was so cruel of them to play the closing song and then have riko immediately get shot though.

obviously i know gojo isn't actually dead considering he's alive in the future, but im worried about what will happen in the next episode.

I loved the first 2 episodes but this was kinda disappointing to be honest. I think this arc needed more time to develop if they really wanted to pull the emotional moment at the end... it's such a let down to see a show I enjoyed so much the past 2 weeks suddenly go for cheap emotional punch that was thoroughly unearned... oh well, the battles were cool as fuck, what can I say...

An anime only I assume. All this will matter in the long run. Might take a season or two for anime to catch up. But there's been nothing Gege has done that wasn't intentional in the long run

I really enjoyed how they accelerated the rescue, allowing us to witness Gojo and Riko's playful interaction, resembling little kids at the beach in Okinawa. It's amusing how they both share a childish nature, which I find pretty hilarious. Unexpectedly, Kento also made an appearance, and that was a delightful surprise.

However, it was shocking to witness someone catch Gojo off guard. Toji managed to skewer and overpower him completely. It's astonishing that Gojo survived that encounter, given Toji's reputation as the Sorc Killer. Toji's ability to inflict such damage without relying on cursed energy, relying purely on his physical prowess, is truly remarkable. While I always thought Gojo was a force of nature, Toji appears to be a godlike killing machine.

On a different note, Geto seemed like a good person. I appreciate that he offered Riko an escape route. It's heartbreaking to think of what could have been, with Riko living a normal life alongside Kuroi, Gojo, and Geto. Unfortunately, with Gojo's failure, the tragic outcome for Riko was inevitable. Now, I can't wait to witness Geto's wrath unleashed on Toji as they face off.

That got dark fast. That poor girl! I mean, I guess she was going to die anyway when she got assimilated, but that feels way worse!
Idk how Gojo is supposed to come back from this. I mean, obviously he's alive given this is a prequel, but he seems extremely friggen dead. Crazy.

Riko’s death was really sad for me!
But now I have two questions.

1. How the F**k is Gojo coming back to life?

2. How exactly will Geto turn evil and start calling humans monkeys? Is Geto maybe not as evil as he seems?

He seemed pretty evil in JJK 0, but I can’t seem to remember the details enough to be sure.

I haven't read the manga but due to spoilers i knew that Riko would die but i didn't know when exactly.
That was astonishing: the music in the background, the heart touching moment, geto's expression and riko's feelings.
What a masterpiece...can't wait for the next episode!

But hey, Gojou can keep his technique up for at least 48 hours. And that's in the past.

You are not wrong. This strikes me as one the issues with any sort of prequel/flashback: we as an audience know the future. The knowledge we come preloaded with can really sap all the dramatic tension from any narrative, for obvious reasons. So I think it is a real testament to the writing that the story can be so engaging (in my opinion, at least) while basically conceding what many would consider the most important part: the ultimate conclusion to the narrative.

Once again, a 10/10 episode. It's amazing the experience that Mappa is managing to bring with this arc that I always considered just "cool" in the manga, with additions that made me care much more about Amanai.

I believe that to be in such a significant position like directing an episode for the first time and doing so well is a great merit for Naoki Miyajima. Several extremely creative scenes, both in the fight choreography and time transitions.

Right, the first 2 episodes were very competently made and had pretty intriguing build-up, also the Chainsaw Man influence and the fact that that show was very competently directed (for the most part).
That's why I had expectations 😛

Its interesting to look back at this episode as a whole after finishing it. Because that beginning sequence with them all at the beach with Riko becomes very sad after seeing the end of this episode. Its like one long goodbye to Riko, she got to spend her final day having fun at the beach. We knew she was going to be sacrificed to Tengen but now that she exclaimed she wanted to stay home and experience life more its all the more sad that Toji just dropped her like that. She's gone, there's nothing bringing her back from a gunshot to the head. Toji is just the definition of built different, using zero cursed energy creating a heavenly pact to increase his body. Gojo couldn't handle him which is saying a lot. Gojo eyes don't have many ways of countering them, but Toji is smart as well as strong. He knew that Gojo had to be worn down until his senses were dull enough. Toji was playing chess while they played checkers and had fun at the beach. This is the ultimate tables being turned moment of this arc. Gojo fight and isn't Toji was incredible animated!! Both of them knowing how dangerous the other is and trying really hard to take them out. Gojo clearing all that cover away only for Toji to drop in the second Gojo loses focus. Slashing his torso up and down and killing Gojo. Along with Riko at the end of the episode, Geto is all on his own to face the madman.

Damn, poor Riko. And she had to die after gaining hope for future. Incredibly cruel. At least she died instantly...

Or did she die? Gojo "died" in a way worse way with multiple lethal wounds. How can he come back? Some time-travel related stuff will happen maybe?

Whatever the case, Toji better die a slow, painful death. Killing Riko was absolutely pointless at this point.

Well, the flow of the fighting animation was good and also meh due to the frames not being consistent. This is the most important fight in the 1st part and Satoru''s Blue felt very underwhelming during the usage due to the effects but the end effect was cool.
I think the sound effects needed a bit more cooking as they didnt make any of the moments feel epic.
